Book "The Power of Now".

What Eckhart Tolle does not teach in this book is that we should not be making assumptions and projecting ourselves into the future, because this generates a lot of anxiety and can not only make our life more difficult than it already is, but it also generates illnesses and can weaken our immune system.

Now every time this happens to me and I start to worry the best way to counteract this anxiety and this worry that I feel is to identify what I feel and automatically turn my thoughts into something positive or just stop worrying. This is like the technique that alcoholics anonymous use where the first step to being cured of this disease is to identify and admit that you have a problem. I get out of my thoughts and feel so much better, why suffer for something that hasn't happened? If you can be enjoying your day peacefully and therefore be enjoying the now.

The biggest problem with living in the now is the paradigm of living with the pain of the past or living with the anxiety of the future. If the imaginary future is better it will generate pleasure or give you a pleasant anticipation and if your future is worse it will generate anxiety; both things are an illusion or a mental ghost that does not exist, for example: in the past you probably made someone you love suffer or someone hurt you and made you suffer and you go through life carrying that great weight and that thought in your mind, isn't it enough to have suffered in the past for what already happened? Why continue with that pain in the present, why torment yourself with something that already happened and that you no longer have control over? Free your thoughts and stop living with the pain of the past, the only thing that exists is now and now is when you can make your life better and choose to be happy.

The paradigm of the future is to generate expectations to the things that are going to happen. I once heard an acquaintance say that in order to be happy he had to meet a girl with certain characteristics and that once he met her she would be a missing part of his life, if you think about it he is incomplete, he is unhappy with the person he is now and is looking for his happiness in something external. Suppose he meets this girl he has always dreamed of, obviously he will be happy when he meets her, but that feeling will only be momentary. Because what is the reason he is incomplete? Because he is not happy with himself and when the initial happiness fades away he will blame his partner for not making him happy anymore. Most people try to appease the anxiety of the future and the pain of the past by using drugs, alcohol, sex, food, work, television and even shopping as anesthetics. This can become a compulsive or addictive activity and all that is achieved through these activities is a very brief relief of all symptoms.

Many people will then wonder what is the way to live in the now? A very simple example of how we have lost the ability to live and enjoy the now is eating our favorite food. I constantly have cravings that I need to satisfy and I do an exercise of imagination and visualize in that moment my favorite food, I imagine its aroma with all my senses and the way my senses focus on the simple pleasure of tasting something delicious. That first bite of my favorite food is like heaven on earth, it's exactly what I wanted and deserve; that's what I tell myself; but the question is isn't it the first bite that tastes the best to me? As I eat the second bite, the third, ... and before it's gone something gets lost along the way, the flavors gradually start to settle on my palate with each bite and it starts to become less and less satisfying and by the time I finish my favorite food I don't even notice the last bite. I am the one who changes, my attention to the present moment changes, my senses lose focus as life and the confusion of thoughts begins to spin like a wheel in my brain without rest.

What Eckhart Tolle teaches us in this book is that we should enjoy our life as if it were that first bite, when we shift our attention to find joy and satisfaction in such a simple thing as eating our favorite food we are living in the now.

I have also been in the place you are now. When I started my dream of starting my own Medical Clinic and was the CEO, I did not know how to fulfill my responsibilities at work while being present at home with my family. However, after making changes in my productivity, goal setting and leadership, I was able to take my company forward through an economic recession the country was in and achieve positive results; all while being home in time to have dinner with my family every night.

I now teach the same principles that helped my leadership, along with my team, here at CIME Academy.
